明莊烈愍皇帝諱由檢，光宗第五子也；明萬歷三十八年十二月生。我太祖高皇帝天命七年，為明熹宗天啟二年；封信王。又五年，為天啟七年，我太宗文皇帝天聰元年也；熹宗崩，愍皇帝即位，冊妃周氏為皇后。明年，改元崇禎。帝承神、熹之敝，慨然有撥亂之志：誅客、魏，撤各邊鎮守內臣。天下想望治平。而求治太急，革廣、寧諸部賞，殺毛文龍，而遼左事愈壞；又凶荒屢告，流賊大起，任事者多僨敗。帝乃果於誅賞，先後易置宰相幾五十人，督師諸臣以失機棄市者後先相望。而宜興周延儒、烏程溫體仁、武陵楊嗣昌用事最久；體仁、嗣昌死，延儒誅。帝以廷臣為不足用，乃復命內臣監軍，而國事愈不可為矣自天聰二年至崇德八年（一六二八～四三，事，詳「明史」；自我世祖章皇帝順治元年迄聖祖仁皇帝康熙二年小腆紀緒，「明史」所不可詳者，敬遵純廟『分注福王年號，撮敘唐、桂二王本末』之諭，為「小腆紀年」焉）。
