漢學至鄭君而集大成,於是鄭學行數百年;宋學至朱子而集大成,於是朱學行數百年。懿彼兩賢,師法百祀。其巍然為一代大宗者,非特以學術之閎通,實由制行之高卓也。以經學論,鄭學、朱學皆可謂小統一時代。鄭學統一,惟北學為然;所謂寧道孔、孟誤,諱言鄭、服非;若南學,則兼用偽孔、王、杜,而不盡宗鄭、服;是猶未得為統一也。朱學統一,惟南方最早。金、元時,程學盛於南,蘇學盛於北。北人雖知有朱夫子,未能盡見其書。元兵下江、漢,得趙復,朱子書始傳於北。姚樞、許衡、竇默、劉因輩翕然從之。於是元仁宗延祐,定科舉法,《易》用朱子本義》,《書》用蔡沈《集傳》,《詩》用朱子集《傳》,《春秋》用胡安國《傳》,惟《禮記》猶用鄭注,是則可謂小統一矣。尤可異者,隋平陳而南並於北,經學乃北反並於南;元平宋而南並於北,經學亦北反并於南。論兵力之強,北常勝南;論學力之盛,南乃勝北。隋、元前後遙遙一轍,是豈優勝劣敗之理然歟?抑報復循環之道如是歟?
