李常為言官,言王安石理財不由仁義,且言安石遂非喜勝,日與其徒呂惠卿等陰籌竊計,思以口舌以文厥過,以公論同乎流俗,以憂國為震驚朕師,以百姓愁歎為出自兼并之言,以卿士僉議為生乎怨嫉之口,而又妄取經據傳會其說,且言理財用而不由仁與義,不上匱則下窮矣。臣自知朝夕蒙戮,不憚開垂閉之口,吐將腐之舌,為陛下反覆道之。凡數千言。上覽之,驚歎再三,撫諭曰:「不意班行中乃有卿也,從前無臣僚說得如此分明,待便為施行。」明日,安石登對,神宗正色視安石:「昨覽李常奏,豈不誤他百姓?」安石垂笏低手,作怠慢之狀,笑而不對。神宗愈怒,遂再問之,安石略陳數語,人不聞安石所言何事,但見上連點頭曰:「極是,極是。」常之奏竟不見降出。常後對人言,不知安石有甚狐媚厭倒之術。

太祖嘗有言不用南人為相,實錄國史皆載,陶《開基萬年錄》、《開寶史譜》言之甚詳,皆言太祖親寫「南人不得坐吾此堂」,刻石政事堂上。或云自王文穆大拜後,吏輩故壞壁,因移石於他處,後浸不知所在。既而,王安石、章相繼用事,為人竊去如前兩書,今館中有其名而亡其書也,頃時尚見其他小說,往往互見,今皆為人節略去,人少有知者,知亦不敢言矣。

舊制講讀官坐而講讀,別置書策於御案上。仁宗時,一日,講讀官已班立,俟上出,久之,忽有內侍官自御屏後出,大聲曰:「有聖旨,今後講筵官起立,御案前講讀。」自是遂為定制。至神宗朝,王安石為侍讀,以言道之所存,請復賜坐,有旨下禮官議,韓維以謂當賜坐,劉分又以謂不可,紛爭不已,議於上前,維曰:「今有時禁中宣長老說法,猶陞高踞坐,吾儒講聖人大中至正之道,乃獨不得坐耶?」分又曰:「彼髡徒何知,自是朝廷不約束耳,維讀聖人書,乃亦欲如彼髡無君臣上下乎?安石非為道,為己重耳。」於是安石之請不行。至元初,程頤復請坐講,太皇曰:「皇帝幼沖,豈可先教改動前人制度。」有旨令不得行。

裕陵嘗問溫公:外議說陳升之如何?溫公曰:二相皆閩人,二執政皆楚人,風俗如何得近厚?又問:王安石如何?溫公曰:天資僻執,好勝不曉事,其拗強似德州,其心術似福州。上首肯微笑。又嘗稱呂惠卿美才,溫公曰:惠卿過於安石,使江充、李訓無才,何以動人主。

王安石配享文宣王廟庭,坐顏孟之下十哲之上,駕幸學,親行奠謁,或謂安石巍然而坐有所未允,蔡知院元度曰:便塑底也不得。
