14  | 自公孫弘以春秋之義繩臣下取漢相，張湯以峻文決理為廷尉，於是見知之法生，而廢格沮誹窮治之獄用矣。其明年，淮南、衡山、江都王謀反迹見，而公卿尋端治之，竟其黨與，坐而死者數萬人，吏益慘急而法令察。當是時，招尊方正賢良文學之士，或至公卿大夫。公孫弘以宰相，布被，食不重味，為下先，然而無益於俗，稍務於功利矣。 |
| 23 | 始參微時，與蕭何善，及為宰相，有隙。至何且死，所推賢唯參。參代何為相國，舉事無所變更，壹遵何之約束。擇郡國吏長大，訥於文辭，謹厚長者，即召除為丞相史。吏言文刻深，欲務聲名，輒斥去之。日夜飲酒。卿大夫以下吏及賔客見參不事事，來者皆欲有言。至者，參輒飲以醇酒，度之欲有言，復飲酒，醉而後去，終莫得開說，以為常。 |
