字元晦，一字仲晦，司勲吏部郎松之子。初學語時，父指天示之曰：「天也」。熹即問天之上何物？」松異之，就外傅，授以《孝經》，讀畢，題其上曰：「不若是非人也」。從羣兒戲，沙上獨端坐，用指畫沙視之，八卦也。年十八，貢於鄉。紹興戊辰，登進士第，主泉州同安簿。請祠，監潭州南嶽廟。明年，用薦與徐度、呂廣問、韓元吉同召，以疾辭。孝宗即位，應詔上封事，與時相不合。除武學博士，進密院編修，待次。乾道五年，丁內艱，胡銓用詩人薦，以未終喪辭。七年、九年，兩召不起，上曰：「熹安貧，守道，可嘉也」。淳熙五年，除知南康軍，奏復白鹿洞書院。明年，應詔上疏激切忤㫖請祠，不報。除提舉江西常平公事。入對，極言時弊，上為動容及之任，所部肅然。上謂王淮曰：「朱熹政事，却可觀也」。以摘發失權，貴意罷歸。十四年，周必大相起提㸃江西刑獄，入奏，上日久不見卿，今當處以清要。翌日，除兵部郎官，引足疾丐祠，為侍郎林栗所紏，仍舊職提刑江西。再召，因投匭進封事，上已就寢，乃起秉燭讀之。明日，除主管太乙宮，兼崇政殿說書，力辭奉祠。光宗即位，除知漳州，自劾罷。寧宗立，趙汝愚首薦熹及陳傅良，擢煥章閣待制、侍講，力辭不允。每編次所講成帙以進，上亦開懷容納。會韓侂胄用事，熹約吏侍彭龜年共論之，而熹不得立於朝矣。沈繼祖、余嚞先後誣以大罪，至乞斬熹，於是攻偽學日急，乃熹日與諸生講學，曽不少休。慶元五年，請致仕，明年卒，年七十一，諡曰文。理宗朝，贈太師，追封信國公，改徽國。淳祐元年，從祀孔子廟廷。
