Biography

Li Mao was the son of Emperor Xuanzong of Tang and his favorite consort, Consort Wu.

In 733, Li Mao married the beautiful Yang Yuhuan (楊玉環), daughter of Yang Xuanyan (楊玄琰) who was census official at Shu Prefecture (蜀州, in modern Chengdu, Sichuan). After his mother's death, Yang Yuhuan came into Xuanzong's favor and the emperor decided to take her as his consort. However, since Princess Yang was already the wife of his son, Emperor Xuanzong stealthily arranged for her to become a Taoist nun with the tonsured name Taizhen in order to prevent criticisms that would affect his plan of making her his concubine. Yang then stayed, for a brief while, as a Taoist nun in the palace itself, before Emperor Xuanzong made her an imperial consort after bestowing his son Li Mao a new wife. Yang henceforth became the favorite consort of the emperor like Consort Wu before.

生平

李琩初名李清。母武惠妃從開元元年得玄宗寵愛，所生的兒子全部夭折。所以，李琩生時，玄宗交給兄寧王李憲之邸宅，李憲之妃元氏撫育、喂乳，把李琩當成己子，未封王。十數年間，李琩一直住在寧王宅。宮中呼之為十八郎。

李琩七歲時，他拜謁兄長永王李璘，符合儀禮，玄宗看出了他的才能。開元十三年（725年）三月，封壽王，入宮中。開元十五年（727年），遙領益州大都督、劍南節度大使。二十三年（735年），加開府儀同三司，改名李琩。十二月，納楊氏為王妃。不久，武惠妃與李林甫計劃擁立他為太子。二十五年（737年），太子李瑛被廢，與鄂王李瑤、光王李琚同日被迫自殺，張九齡爭之未果。同年，武惠妃去世。開元二十六年（738年），李林甫等人積極擁立李琩，高力士推薦皇三子李璵（李亨）為太子。

在母親武惠妃逝世後，玄宗妃嬪中「無當帝意者」，他的妻子楊氏逐成為玄宗的新寵。開元廿八年（740年），玄宗命楊氏出家為女道士。他與楊氏的婚姻結束，沒有正式的史料顯示兩人曾有子女，民間傳奇稱有一女。

開元廿九年（741年），寧王李憲去世，他視李憲為義父，服喪以報其恩。天寶四載（745年），韋昭訓之女韋氏為壽王妃，同時，前妻楊氏被皇帝立為貴妃。

至德元年（756年），安史之亂爆發後，玄宗奔蜀，李琩與之同行。途上，陳玄禮兵士凌遲處死了楊國忠、逼玄宗賜死楊貴妃，玄宗命李琩撫慰兵士。玄宗命皇太子李亨留下抗敵，後來李亨自行稱帝，是為唐肅宗，尊玄宗為太上皇。

唐代宗大曆十年（775年），李琩去世，追贈太傅。
